Divisions

The Cochrane Recreational Hockey league consists of 4 divisions: Tyke, Atom, Peewee and Bantam.

TYKE (age 5-6)

The Tyke program is a learn-to-play program that is designed to allow boys and girls of all abilities to progress through several levels of hockey development over up to a 3-year period from ages 5 to 6 (in the calendar year the season begins). Participants achieve higher levels of confidence and ability, as they prepare themselves for entry into the Novice division.

The Tyke program includes weekly 1-hour practices on Fridays at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre in Cochrane. Practices start at either 5 or 6:15pm. Saturdays are game days, with 1 hour games starting between late morning and early afternoon. About 1/3 of the games are at Spray Lake arena, with the remainder of the games in the surrounding communities of: Bragg Creek, Redwood Meadows, Canmore and Black Diamond. Note: some of the communities have the unique experience of outdoor rinks, so be sure to check the weather on game days, and ensure you and you child are dressed appropriately. Occasionally games are cancelled due to cold or excessive snow.

Objectives of the Cochrane Cougars Tyke Program:

  • All participants have an enjoyable introduction and experience with hockey.
  • Provide a healthy environment for fun and learning.
  • Each child is taught and given the opportunity to develop the basic fundamental skills of skating, puck control, passing and shooting.
  • Coaches encourage participation, fair play, fun and skill development.

NOVICE (age 7-8)

About 1/3 of the games are at Spray Lake arena, with the remainder of the games in the surrounding communities of: Bragg Creek, Redwood Meadows, Canmore and Black Diamond. ATOM (age 9-10)

The Atom program is designed for children of all skills levels, and includes those who have played hockey in our Tyke program, and those who are new to hockey. The Atom program is a three-year program open to boys and girls from ages 9 to 10 (in the calendar year the season begins).

The Atom program includes weekly 1-hour practices on Fridays at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre in Cochrane. Practices start at either 6:15 or 7:30 pm. Saturdays are game days, with 1 hour games starting between early and mid afternoon. About 1/3 of the games are at Spray Lake arena, with the remainder of the games in the surrounding communities of: Bragg Creek, Redwood Meadows, Canmore and Black Diamond. PEEWEE (age 11-12)

Although most participants in the Peewee program have played one or more years of hockey, those players who are new to hockey are welcome.

The Peewee program includes weekly 1-hour practices on Fridays at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre in Cochrane. Practices start at either 7 or 8 pm. Saturdays are game days, with 1 hour games typically starting mid afternoon. About 1/3 of the games are at Spray Lake arena, with the remainder of the games in the surrounding communities of: Bragg Creek, Redwood Meadows, Canmore and Black Diamond. BANTAM (age 13-15)

Most participants in the Bantam program have played at least several years of recreational hockey. Bantam-level players skill levels are more advanced, therefore while newer players to hockey are welcomed, they are encouraged take extra time, outside of regular team practices and games, to develop their skills.

The Bantam program includes weekly 1-hour practices at Spray Lakes arena in Cochrane. Practices start at either 6:15 or 7:30pm.
